What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that we can use to find out if our weight is healthy or not, by using our height and weight. It is calculated as an individual’s weight, divided by the squire of his/her height in meters (kg/m2). Being overweight or underweight may lead to some health issues and conditions. Therefore, it is very useful to know whether our weight is in healthy proportion to our height. It is worth noting that a healthy and ideal BMI for most adults is in the 18.5 to 24.9 range (NHS, 2022).

According to the World Health Organisation (2022) for adults over 20 years old, BMI falls into one of the following categories:

BMI             Nutritional status
Below 18.5             Underweight
18.5–24.9             Normal weight
25.0–29.9             Pre-obesity
30.0–34.9            Obesity class I
35.0–39.9            Obesity class II
Above 40            Obesity class III

Criticisms of Body Mass Index (BMI)

Certainly, Body Mass Index (BMI) is a good measure; however, it has some limitations. Some experts argue that this measure relies mostly on an individual’s weight and height only. As the measure does not take an individual’s gender, physical activities, or ethnicity into consideration, some health questions may remain unanswered.
